I remember in high school that I used to use CAD to draw up sketches of my future house. I think that that software has come a tremendous way since then.

3-D CAD software is amazing these days. Our PCs have gotten fast enough that you can do real work on them.

For 2-D CAD software I like SmartDraw (http://www.smartdraw.com) (~$200). It even has a free trial so you can give it a spin without paying first.

This post made me think of the Turtle graphics stuff I used to mess with on my old Commodore 64. It wasn't CAD and it wasn't very fast. :D

Has anyone had any operating experience with the new offering from Dassault Systems? It looks as though it is a 3-D design system probably based on their Catia System.

Please add your comments, experiences to this thread.

Thanks,
Bill

With all software there is a tradeoff between ease of use, quality of interface and features. I found that TGIF (freeware) does a fine job when the aim is to create drawings and diagrams for scientific papers.
