Obligatory disclaimer:
Anything I write in this blog is my personal opinion only. This blog and $5.00 might get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks. I may be wrong about something, but especially in a blog, I’ll typically have an opinion.
I manage the web presence and the e-Learning efforts for the Computer society. I understand what JohnL wrote about being careful during blogging. I talked with my boss, Neal Linson, and he said it was fine. Don’t blame him, he’s pretty smart most of the time . I’m great at stating the obvious, but maybe once in a while my musing can be helpful.
I have worked in technical management for over 20 years. I’ve worn a ton of different hats through the years, hardware, software, systems, QA, product management, project management, etc. I like the variety.
I won’t say how old I am, but I will tell you that my first computer had 2,048 bytes of RAM.
I designed a parallel supercomputer to implement custom algorithms to solve the missile tracking problem for SDI (star wars, President Reagan). As near as we could tell for about 6 months, it was one of the fastest computers on the planet, maybe the fastest. Of course, these days a single chip processor is faster, but oh well.
I worked for AOL for about 10 years during the dot-com era. I learned a lot of things about the web and user interfaces and design over that period. In this blog, I’ll be sharing my opinions about the web and what works and what doesn’t, and where I think we should go. I am happy to work with the leadership to manage our web presence as best I can in line with the strategic direction of the society.
I’ve been here for a little over a year. During my first year, we have fixed literally thousands of broken links, regularized some of the menus, replaced the site map pages, updated the web responsibilities chart, increased the update frequency on the main page, on and on.
However, the time has come to take our web presence to the next level. Right now, it’s a decent 1990 website. Let’s move it forward together.
